Chinese Super League side Tianjin Quanjian have admitted they have reached a verbal agreement with their No 1 transfer target.
“Basically, a decision on which player we are going to buy in the summer has been made,” club owner Shu Yuhui said.
“And we have secured a verbal agreement with the player as well as his club.
“We have not signed a formal contract yet, and I will not reveal the player’s name during the sensitive period.
“We will get [at least] one, but two [signings from Europe] is also possible.
“Buying a world-class centre forward is a no-brainer.”
Chelsea striker Diego Costa is the likely target and Tianjin Quanjian have made no attempt to hide their interest in the Spain international in the past.
The 28-year-old was also spotted at an exclusive London restaurant last month with super agent Jorge Mendes and a number of businessmen, fuelling rumours he will leave Stamford Bridge.
Speaking last month about a move for Costa, Tianjin Quanjian owner Yuhui said: “I can only say that we are still working on the deal.
“And we have already made contacts with several players.
“We have high standards [in buying foreign players] and those players prefer top clubs such as Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
“It’s safe to say that we have the same transfer targets as those illustrious clubs.”
