Seven Chelsea players risk missing out on a Premier League winners’ medal, even though departed stars Branislav Ivanovic and Oscar will receive one.
That’s why they’re champions: Eight games that fired Chelsea to the Premier League title
The west London club secured their fifth Premier League title with a 1-0 victory at West Brom on Friday night, with Michy Batshuayi popping up with the winning goal.
Chelsea will officially be presented with the trophy on the final day of the season, against Sunderland, though not everyone will be handed a medal at the ceremony.
The Premier League will provide 40 medals for players and staff, but rules state that only players who have played a minimum of five matches are guaranteed one, with several of Chelsea’s squad not meeting that requirement.
Asmir Begovic has just one Premier League appearances to his name, meaning that, even if he starts the Blues’ remaining two games, he will not have enough appearances to be guaranteed a medal.
Similarly, Nathan Ake – who was recalled from his loan spell at Bournemouth during the January window – has only made one substitute appearance in his half season back at the club.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek is guaranteed a Premier League winners’ medal having made six appearances, but has actually played just 31 minutes of action – less than Begovic!
Youngsters Kenedy, Ola Aina, Charly Musonda and Dominic Solanke, who were all in and around the first-team squad this term, will also miss out on a medal, as will veteran back-up goalkeeper Eduardo.
CHELSEA’S REMAINING FIXTURES
Watford (A) – Mon 15 May
Sunderland (H) – Sun 21 May
Arsenal FA Cup (N) – Sat 27 May
The good news for Chelsea’s squad players is that only 20 first-teamers have racked up enough minutes to definitely receive medals, although Antonio Conte and his 11-man strong backroom team will also expect medals.
Ivanovic and Oscar made 13 and 11 appearances respectively before joining Zenit and Shanghai SIPG, though John Obi Mikel misses out having not made a single appearance before joining Tianjin TEDA.
