Manchester United ‘Reach Agreement’ With Griezmann Agent
Manchester United have come to an agreement with the representatives of Antoine Griezmann over a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo – quoted by the Manchester Evening News – claims that United will need to pay the France international’s release fee with Atletico Madrid before the deal can go through. That fee is set at €100million (£85million).
Griezmann, who scored in last night’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid, is Jose Mourinho’s number one transfer target for the summer. However, he has constantly refused to commit himself to a move to Old Trafford. His public pronouncements on the matter have always focused on the poor English weather and his happiness at Atletico.
But United fans will be hopeful of securing one of the world’s top players. Griezmann finished in third place in last year’s Ballon D’Or behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
Rooney Wants United Stay
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney wants to stay with the club, but he admits he may have to leave if he wants regular first-team football.
The 31-year-old has made just 12 Premier League starts for United under Jose Mourinho this season and has been sat on the subs’ bench for 13 other games being used in ten of those. But speaking at a press conference ahead of United’s Europa League semi-final second leg clash with Spanish side Celta Vigo this evening Rooney admitted that he hasn’t played for United as much as he would have liked and he hinted at a possible exit.
“Would I like to stay? I’ve been at this club 13 years, but I want to play football,” said Rooney. “Here? Of course. I think football changes. You have different challenges in your career. This season I haven’t played as much as I would have liked to. I’ve tried to help the team on the pitch and off the pitch. I haven’t thrown my toys out of the pram but I’m a football player and I want to play football. The more I play, the better, and the more I feel I can help the team.”
Rooney has been linked with clubs in China and with a move back to his former club Everton. His £300,000-a-week wage will have to be trimmed considerably if he makes a return to Goodison Park . However, the striker appears to have a choice between a huge pay packet and a lower wage if he wants to continue playing regular first-team football in England.
Clubs in China will have no problem exceeding Rooney’s current salary. Beijing Guoan and Tianjin Quanjian are both being linked.
Mertens Set To Sign New Deal At Napoli
Manchester United transfer target Dries Mertens looks set to sign a new deal with Serie A side Napoli. The Belgium international was linked in March with interest from United. However, the 30-year-old looks set to stay at Napoli on improved terms.
NapoliSoccer.net claims Mertens’ release clause will rise to a figure close to €30million (£25.2million) while his wages will increase to €4million nett of taxes – the equivalent of just over £100,000 a week gross.
Mertens has scored 24 goals in Serie A this season. However, he turned 30 last weekend and his age appears to have ruled out a Manchester United transfer.
